Things to consider while living minimalist

Book Summary

What is labour day?

Labour Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers. Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

( The trade union movement (trade unionism) consists of the collective organisation of working people developed to represent and campaign for better working conditions and treatment from their employers and, by the implementation of labour and employment laws, from their governments. The standard unit of organisation is the trade union.)

For most countries, Labour Day is linked with, International Workers' Day, which occurs on 1 May. For other countries, Labour Day is celebrated on a different date, often one with special significance for the labour movement in that country. Labour Day is a public holiday in many countries.

In New Zealand, Labour Day is a public holiday held on the fourth Monday in October.

In the United States, Labour Day is a federal holiday observed on the first Monday of September. It is customarily viewed as the end of the summer vacation season. Many schools open for the year on the day after Labour Day.

Have you ever come up with this thought that you have way too much stuff? That stuff needs to be direct where it is needed. But letting go isn't easy, we feel attached to our stuff.

The idea of minimalism has grown into a way of life that emphasizes living with less- thus appreciating more. if you're wondering more about how to incorporate it into your home, here's everything to know about minimalist living.

While living minimalism,  you need to choose the stuff that is meant to be used, not kept. So, when the time comes to declutter, you don't end up in a hard situation like guilt specifically.

for example, you go to the supermarket to buy a face wash but end up buying makeup products like lip liners or more, without giving much thought to how many you have at home. Just in case scenarios, not very likely to happen. we often have good intentions of using the stuff, but sometimes, it just doesn't happen and ends up in a makeup bag or somewhere till after its expiry date.

Minimalist living typically involves decluttering, organizing and minimizing your home - all in order to lead a simpler, more purposeful lifestyle.

Remember 'why' living minimalism

Remind yourself why you choose minimalism, simply to create an environment that's your sanctuary, not a source of stress. More money, more time, improved well-being, good for the environment and more gratitude and mindfulness are some benefits when you living with less.

Beginner in the minimalistic journey

If you are feeling overwhelmed by the thought of living minimalist, the best way to overcome this is simply to get started.

Start small, but be consistent. Pick one project at a time and tackle it. Remember this, it is not going to be an overnight process.

TIP 1: Start noticing and paying attention to the things you actually use. let go of the things which you no longer use.

Keep in mind, when you need things to disappear, consider only things bring to the second-hand shops that are in better condition and more likely to sell. Don't treat second-hand shops as dump grounds.

TIP 2: Take your time to access each of your unwanted items - fix what you can do yourself or go to the local repair shop. if it's fixable, then take a moment to decide either you want for yourself and get a new one or direct to the op shop.

TIP3: Adapt a habit of organising and sorting things regularly, this will help you reduce shopping for unwanted items, in other words, resist the temptation to buy more. We always find the wardrobe the toughest space to start with and have a hard time getting rid of clothes.

A week ago, I was watching 'Maid' on Netflix. The popular Netflix series 'Maid' is based on the true story of the author 'Stephanie Land'. The Series depicts the storyline of how a single Mother turns into housecleaning to make ends meet as she escaped an abusive relationship and overcomes homelessness to create a better life for her daughter.

There are other women in the shelter who escaped from an abusive relationship, and who needed clothes more than you do because you hardly wear some of your possessions. So, find the local charity, and donate there.

'Why Women Wear What They Wear'- The book by author 'Sophie Woodward' uses real women's lives and clothing decisions- observed and discussed at the moment of getting dressed- to illustrate theories of clothing, the body and identity.

Woodward divides clothing into three categories 'inactive', 'potential', and 'active'. Often only utilizing an average of 37 per cent of their wardrobe on a regular basis, women keep up to 12 per cent of inactive items for a host of reasons which the book goes on to explore.

Do and Don't for Clothing Donation

  • Consider donating clothes you simply don't wear anymore and that are in a better condition likely new or gently worn.
  • No undergarments and shorts that still have a weird smell.
  • Too small or tights and don't fit your style then it's time to pass it down to someone else.
  • If any of the clothes have spots or stains, try to remove them yourself. Make sure all items have been recently washed/dry cleaned so as to be fresh and clean for the new owner.
TIP 4: Limit your home decor shopping to meaningful items. I know, how hard to resist spending money on beautiful items that you got on sale. It is better to own fewer decorations that bring attention and value rather than collect decorations that don't hold any specific meaning in life.

My recent buy-in beauty collection is from Sephora.

Fenty Skin Fat Water Pore- Refining Toner Serum

Star ★★★★☆

I like the twist and squeeze design. It does have a mild fragrance that didn't last any longer. The 2-in-1 toner-serum combo targets pores reduce the look of dark spots, smooths and gives the refreshing look to the face. The combo applies to the skin feels like a liquid gel and absorbs quickly without drying or stripping the skin.

The amazing part is, that you don't need a cotton pad, just apply it to your palms, then pat and press over your face; letting it absorb. Its nourishing hydration gives a soft and smooth look to the face. I would recommend this product.

Sephora Collection Nano Lip liner (Light Brown)

Star ★★★★☆

Great Lip liner and smooth finish but very small size. I didn’t expect that size to be true, otherwise worth buying. Little overpriced for that size. Happy with Colour Shade. Wear it regularly.

With one simple habit, you can take control of your life and also improve the most important relationship in your life.

That’s what this book is all about: confidence and celebration of yourSELF.

In a nutshell

At some level of your life, moments happen when demands of life pile up, and end up with negative thoughts, all you wanted a break from all this. 'Mel Robbins' book a high 5 habit helps you to improve to take control of your life with one simple habit.

This book answers all the following questions :

Q: Why do it first thing in the morning?
Q: Why do you high five in the bathroom?
Q: Does it work for everyone?
Q: Why does something so simple work?
Q: I’ve got real problems. How can this help me during tough times?
Q: What if I don’t feel like doing it?
Q: What if I feel like a failure right now?

Introduction

One morning, Mel Robbins stumbled into her bathroom, and without thinking, placed her hand against the bathroom mirror. Robbins high five herself and communicates self-love words.

This habit is a simple and kind gesture toward yourself, something you need and deserve.

After this enthusiastic feeling, Robbins gave herself a high-five each morning,  and over time, she used this daily practice to rebuild her self-confidence.

Insight #1 High 5 habit is a research-driven holistic approach to life, this power of practice reprogram your subconscious to stop criticizing your reflection and start loving it.

It's a transfer of energy and belief from one person to another. It awakens something within you. It’s a reminder of something you’ve forgotten.

Think about how great you are at supporting and celebrating other people.

As a mother,  you support your child and celebrate his joys
As a wife, you support your husband's decisions and celebrate his success
As a member of the family,  you respect other members' points of views

But when it comes to celebrating and supporting yourself, you take yourself for granted and move ahead with other decisions. It's time to wake up and start celebrating your presence.

Insight #2 High 5 habit beat the struggle to love yourself even in hard times

Stop being hard on yourself. Your relationship with yourself is the foundation of every relationship you have in life. Research shows that when you’re tough on yourself, it has the opposite impact that you want it to have.  It just shuts you down with a discouraging feeling. It is the reason why you are stuck.

Life is rewarding when you take chances to learn to cheer up yourself, be kinder to yourself  —and that begins by practising acts of kindness toward yourself every day.

Besides celebrating for success, there is a need to celebrate for yourself, for just being you are, where you are. This habit makes you realize you have your own back. It helps you build trust in yourself and your ability to win in life.

Insight #3 A high five fulfils the deepest and most important emotional needs that are central to every human’s well-being.

We all have basic needs that are fundamental to our fulfilment, happiness, and survival. Three core emotional needs: to be seen, heard, and loved for the unique individual that you are.

Self-hatred act like a poison that kills your innate desire to be seen, heard and celebrated.

When you high five yourself in the mirror, you are fulfilling those fundamental emotional needs for yourself. You see yourself. You hear yourself saying, “It’ll be okay” “You can do it” or just “I love you.”

Insight #4 High 5 habit clear out reticular activating system filter just like dryer filter which clogged by lint.

This is how the reticular activating system works,  fuzzy residues from your life, since childhood, negative experiences, opinions, rejections,  disappointments, trauma, guilt and self-doubt clogged RAS in your brain. With this jammed filter, you keep repeating the same mistakes, thinking the same negative thoughts. That's why you need to practice this habit every day to clear out this filter.

High 5 habits would help you to shut up the negative voice in your head and encourage you to handle the problems much easier.

Insight #5 high 5 habit helps you out to replace your negative self-talk with a positive one.

You are judging yourself with your insecurities and negative self-talk. How the negative self-talk works when we come around with people? All the insecurities and negative thoughts are in your head and all these thoughts, you automatically project onto the other person. In this way, you start assuming the other person thinks the same as you think about yourself.

The constant need to be liked and have other people validate your decisions leads you to twist yourself and your life into knots and will keep you in careers, friendships, and marriages that make you miserable.

Stop taking validation for your decisions from others. This will keep your careers,  friendships and marriages at stake. You are living a life as a lie for other people's approval.

Favourite lines from the book

Resilience is hardwired into your DNA. At the stage of baby, we learn new things without giving up. we kept trying and pulled ourselves to the best because at that stage we didn't know about negative words say to ourselves.

Take action

When you are ready to start, take the high 5 challenge

Commit to giving yourself a High five first thing in the morning for five days in a row and notice how you feel. Pair this practice with a mantra that makes you feel loved and seen. Whatever your reaction, allow yourself to feel it.

Making it a habit to do it to yourself, will change the patterns that are stored in your subconscious that relate to you—and that will improve your mood, help you achieve your goals, and fundamentally shift the trajectory of your life.

High 5 habit is a way to fix your self-love, so what are waiting for raise your hand and seal this self-love into your subconscious mind.

Wrap up

High 5 Habit is the fastest and easiest way to override your pattern of looking at yourself and feeling self-doubt and self-hatred, and replacing it with the feeling of self-love and self-acceptance. This is a book about changing the default programming that keeps you trapped in a destructive and unsupportive relationship with yourself.

High 5 habit may sound sceptical to you but the author explains the science behind this and give you the ways how to use this habit.
